November President’s Message

Let’s be honest here. November is probably my least favourite month of the year. The days are shorter; we are waking up in the dark and coming home from work in the dark. Some days it’s hard to be motivated.

A couple weekends ago, I got to see my son and his hockey team succeed. I saw this group of boys who, on their own are good players, but when they come together, create something special. Not one kid is a superstar, but everyone pulls his weight and does what needs to be done to win. They play as a team and put aside everything else for the common goal.

It really got me thinking. These boys are doing something very important and they don’t even realize it. They are having fun and passionately loving what they do. They are building team skills that will carry them forward in life. They have learned from the coach what their role is, and if they do that, while trusting that their teammates are doing their own jobs, everyone will succeed. The success with a team is so much sweeter than doing it by yourself. Who wants to have a celebratory dance party alone?!? Great teams use the skills of each person and view diversity as an asset.

MPI Ottawa is full of talented people who come together with their various talents and elevate our industry. Our education events team worked together in October to deliver the first workshop of the year, and they have been busy creating another innovative program for November. As well, the programming committee has been working on the Festive Dinner (yes, we are thinking about the holidays already!) that will be happening on November 30 at the Hilton Lac-Leamy.

I am constantly amazed by our dedicated volunteers. They are the epitome of a great team on so many levels. At the board, whenever we have the opportunity to chat with other chapters, it really shows that we are incredibly fortunate to have so many dedicated members. Our MPI Ottawa team members (the board, committee volunteers, members and our administrator) are invaluable to the success of this Chapter. We all play our role and when we come together, after all the planning and the execution, it is exciting and awesome.

So now, after I have gone on and on about hockey, and I am sure you can tell where I have been spending a lot of my free time this fall, I want to continue to encourage you to get involved with our Chapter. Bring your unique viewpoint and expertise to our events. We get better and stronger because of our members and that is why this Chapter exists. If you want to get involved, volunteer now!

Have a great month and I hope to see you at one of our events soon!
