The MPI FOUNDATION – “Securing tomorrow by strengthening today”

Hi there, it’s me again, your President-Elect, sharing some information about the MPI Foundation for you, our valuable members.

I have written previously about the great MPI Foundation scholarships that are available to each of you. I did not know though that there are four different types of Foundation Scholarships. These categories are:

  1. Membership Scholarships (share this information with your colleagues who are not yet members)
  2. Professional Development (i.e., working towards your CMM, CMP, Experiential Event Series, and more…)
  3. Conference Scholarships (to attend events like WEC, EMEC, IMEX America, IMEX Frankfurt…)
  4. Academic Scholarships, including universities in Toronto.

Last month, our own MPI Ottawa President, Jennifer McAndrew, received a scholarship that she applied to attend a three-day course on Event Design. This course was based on the Event Canvas methodology, a strategic management template for developing new or documenting existing events and conference models. McAndrew is working towards receiving the Event Design Certificate (EDC). Her scholarship was generously sponsored by FMAV , in partnership with the MPI Foundation. The value was approximately $2,800! Wouldn’t that be an amazing MPI benefit to share with your employer? I am sure there would be no trouble renewing your membership if you were armed with this. Additionally, as an independent business owner or planner, this is an opportunity to access valuable resources for which there is likely no budget.

McAndrew will be the first to tell you that besides the work involved with attending and completing the course, the most difficult part of this process was just taking the leap to apply. With a little dedicated time to complete the on-line application, the success rate of being awarded these scholarships and grants is really good. Give it a shot—what have you got to lose?

During the 2016-17 year, our Chapter benefitted directly from the programs and grants offered by the MPI Foundation. In November 2016, we were the recipient of the FMAV grant to host an Event Canvas education session which was well received by both our planner and supplier members. Throughout the year, members from the Ottawa Chapter have received nine grants and scholarships, including MPI memberships, scholarships to attend WEC, and funding to enhance their careers with professional designations. The total amount awarded to our Chapter from the Foundation was over $9,000.

As reported in the MPI Foundation’s 2016 Annual Impact Report, there continues to be impressive growth in its numbers and transparency to show where the funds are distributed. The great part is that all the efforts have a clear focus on “securing tomorrow by strengthening today”.

On a financial note, the MPI Foundation has been working towards creating an Endowment Fund to ensure its sustainability. I am thrilled to let you know that this has finally come to fruition. The fund is now $1 million strong with an ultimate goal of $5 million.

As President-Elect, I will work to find opportunities for our Chapter to support the MPI Foundation which in turn, will help our members. Stay tuned for more on this throughout the year!

For all the great scholarships that are available to members, and to help fund your education goals, please check out the MPI Foundation. I would be happy to assist you in the application process.
