MPI Ottawa Volunteer Testimonials
Committee: Community Outreach and CSR
Joining the MPI Ottawa Community Outreach Committee allows me to be associated with a cause that MPI supports. The most rewarding experience while on this Committee has been helping with the School Breakfast Program. As their motto says, this program is a great way to empower every child to realize their full potential. Being part of this Committee has given me a great deal of satisfaction both personally and professionally. It is an opportunity to strengthen my ties to the community, meet new friends, and reinforce my existing relationships. Like Ellen DeGeneres said “It’s what we’re all supposed to do with one another. Be nice, generous and kind. That’s the point of being a human”.
Committees: Member Care, Strategic Education
I volunteer for MPI Ottawa because it helps me give back to our industry. I felt very welcomed into the meetings community when I first joined and I wanted to be able to be that for others who were just starting out in their careers. Originally when I started by volunteering with the Program and Education Committee a few years ago, I did it to gain experience and meet people, which is exactly what happened. I got my hands dirty planning events for our members and met several mentors along the way. This also led me to taking the lead on the Chapter’s ‘Unconference’ last season, which I believe is the main reason that I won the Rising Star Award at the Prix Prestige Awards Gala. Working on one-off events for the Community Outreach Committee also grew my network and led me to my current position at the Federation of Humanities and Social Sciences, which I love! For the upcoming year, I am focusing on the chair position with the Student Liaison Subcoummittee. I believe that there are many young professionals in this industry and we need to make sure to connect and provide them new opportunities and also learn from them. They have a lot of energy and great ideas. I feel lucky to be able to connect with many of them by volunteering with MPI.
Committee: Community Outreach & CSR
I joined the MPI Ottawa Community Outreach Committee to network, be involved and give back. Being part of this Committee makes a difference to a lot of people in the best way. Volunteering makes me feel happy and rewarded and I get a great deal of enjoyment in helping others. On a professional level it has introduced me to so many people that I might not have had the chance to work with otherwise. I have learnt a lot and have made a lot of really good friends and business contacts, which has been a bonus.
Volunteering for MPI Ottawa is definitely a great way to get inter-connected with members of the event industry. Once I finished the Event Management program at Algonquin College, I knew I wanted to get involved as much as I could in the meeting and planning industry and gain additional knowledge. After attending a few MPI events, I decided to be more active and engage with my membership and join an MPI Volunteer Committee. It was the best decision! Not only does it give me the opportunity to reconnect with former colleagues, I get to meet new people that share the same passion as I do. I am currently volunteering for the Publications Committee, but I look forward to joining another and getting involved in a different way. This is only the beginning of my MPI volunteer experience and I love where it’s going!
Committee: Strategic Education – GMID
I volunteer for MPI Ottawa because it is the best way to connect with a variety of great people from the industry! I am grateful to have the opportunity to lear from other members through volunteering. I hope to be able to teach or mentor new meeting professionals in the future as well. I really enjoy the feeling of being part of this community especially when everyone is so open and friendly. Those are important attributes I look for when choosing organizations to volunteer for. I always look forward to interacting with my committee members.
